The Democratic Party was founded in 1990 under the leadership of the economist Gramoz Pashko. It gained 75 of the 250 seats in Parliament in the 1991 elections. It won the 1992 elections and its new leader, Sali Berisha, who conquered the presidency, formed the first non-Communist government since 1944. The elections of 1996 where once again won by the party, but the popular revolt due to the scandal on the financial pyramids that had ruined many Albanians forced the government to resign. The elections that followed gave the victory to the Socialist Party and the DP became an opposition party.
